Fostering the Sustainability of Marine Fisheries in Central and Western Mediterranean Subregions through an Ecosystem Approach - GCP/INT/362/EC (Baby 01) 2022
    Also available in:

Fisheries management in the Mediterranean is complex for several reasons, including, among others, fishing overcapacity; different levels of information development, in particular for biological and socio economic data that were neither readily available nor standardized; insufficient and weak legal aspects and measures for monitoring, surveillance and control activities; and inadequate institutional frameworks for subregional fisheries management. Against this background, Phase II of the CopeMed project (the first phase was implemented from 1996 to 2005) sought to strengthen science based fisheries management through enhanced technical scientific capacities, and the promotion of scientific cooperation among participating countries in the central and western Mediterranean subregions . The participation of all stakeholders in the fisheries management process was not yet sufficient. Therefore, the current project, representing the tenth year of the second phase, aimed to strengthen regional cooperation, in support to the sustainable management of fisheries, in particular in three target countries, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia; as well as to consolidate and build on the achievements obtained so far.

Agritourism in the Mediterranean region is a promising strategy for transforming agrifood systems into more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable models. By integrating agriculture, tourism, and food sectors, it delivers multifaceted benefits spanning environmental conservation, economic revitalization, and social cohesion.Environmentally, agritourism supports biodiversity, promotes local food consumption, and minimizes environmental footprints through practices like organic farming and renewable energy use. Economically, agritourism revitalizes rural areas, creates jobs, especially for women and youth, and strengthens local value chains. Socially, agritourism builds trust between producers and consumers, enhances food literacy, and empowers marginalized groups. To fully leverage agritourism as a driver of systemic change, integrated policies, rural infrastructure investments and collaborative governance platforms are critical. Equipping stakeholders with training and amplifying farmers' voices in policymaking can help scale sustainable practices across the region.Sustainable agritourism offers a systems approach to addressing global agrifood challenges while safeguarding the Mediterranean's rich cultural and natural heritage, positioning the region as a leader in sustainable development.

Pathways for agrifood systems transformation and regional cooperation in the Mediterranean 2024
    Also available in:

Sustainable agrifood systems are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, yet structural inequalities and recent crises underscore the urgent need for transformative change. This report focuses on the Mediterranean region, examining challenges and opportunities for agrifood systems transformation within its unique socio-economic and political context. Drawing on global and regional momentum, the report identifies barriers hindering transformation, proposes policy recommendations, and highlights opportunities for regional cooperation. It leverages insights from the UN Food Systems Summits and a typological approach to categorize countries based on their agrifood systems and economic development status. The analysis reveals diverse challenges but also positive attributes such as dietary traditions and biodiversity. While most initiatives prioritize defining goals and establishing support ecosystems, there's a need for greater policy coherence and governance mechanisms. The report identifies strategies to address these gaps, including providing policy guidance, expanding collaborative networks, enhancing data management, and unlocking sustainable finance.Ultimately, an integrated approach that harmonizes various agrifood systems, aligns with local realities, and strengthens partnerships is essential for transformative change. By leveraging existing initiatives, expanding collaboration, and addressing unique regional challenges, the report charts a united pathway towards sustainable agrifood systems in the Mediterranean, fostering prosperity and resilience.
