A technical handbook 2002The purpose of this handbook is to summarize experience gained over recent years in fishery statistical development by the Fishery Information, Data and Statistics Unit (FIDI) of FAO, and provide planners and users of fishery surveys with simple and step-by-step guidance for developing and implementing cost-effective and sustainable fishery surveys. The methodological and operational concepts discussed here apply equally to both marine and inland capture fisheries and are presented in a manner t hat is generic enough to make them adaptable to most commonly used data collection systems. Statistical aspects are presented in a descriptive rather than theoretical manner. Emphasis is placed on the understanding and interpretation of the statistics and related indicators collected, rather than on the computations producing them. Readers interested in a more in-depth discussion on statistical and computing approaches may make use of the list of references that is given at the end of the handbo ok.

The need to collect data arises when attempts are made to manage the economic and social activities of a society. For example data on population size and distribution are used in planning the building, of houses, schools, roads and hospitals. The raw data which appear on the source document (e.g., a census form filled in by the head of a household) are collected and processed to provide statistics of, among other things, the number of children of primary school age in each district of each town. Instead of the wealth of individual detail which exists on the source document about age, family size, occupation, income and activities we may, for the purposes of the types of planning listed above, devise a simplified description or model of the population. In our model there may be only four age classes pre-school, school age, child bearing age and post-child bearing and we may use this as a basis for estimating the number of school places or hospital beds needed in five years time, given c ertain information about numbers of children born per family per year and rate of hospitalization for different age groups. This model describes the age structure of the population in a simple way which helps us to make predictions about the changes likely to take place in the population. -

No results found.The Conference was co-hosted by the Governments of Australia and Canada in co-operation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and with the support of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USA, and the New South Wales Department of Fisheries, Australia. More than 160 delegates from 26 countries participated and 26 papers were presented. The Conference was held in response to a recommendation made at the 1996 FAO/Japan Technical Consulta tion on Wastage in Fisheries (Tokyo) which identified as a key concern the lack of reliable, basic level data from the majority of global fisheries, particularly when attempting to estimate global discards and the incidental mortality of non-target species. The purpose of the Conference was to address the challenges and opportunities of fisheries monitoring that are common to many fisheries. The Conference speakers, panel discussions, and workshops were organized around the following five main t hemes: 1) Rational for monitoring programmes - conceptual and legal frameworks, 2) Perspectives on monitoring from key stakeholders, 3) Designing, executing and analysing monitoring programmes, 4) Key components and issues for monitoring programmes; and 5) Integrated monitoring. The recommendation that came out of the Conference was presented to the 1999 Meeting of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI). It stated that the FAO Fisheries Department should undertake the preparation of guidelines fo r the integrated monitoring of fisheries within the context of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries with the aim to improve the management of fisheries and the sustainable use of living resources, through the formulation of an appropriate framework for the collection of relevant data and information from fisheries and their associated ecosystems.
