Synopsis (short abstract) This paper presents the results, analysis, and discussion of four experimental trials conducted in Aden, comparing sun drying and solar dome drying of three species of fish. Solar dome drying is shown to be a realistic proposition compared with sun drying principally due to the very low losses achievable with solar dome drying. Technical feasibility of this methodology has been effectively demonstrated and should be supplemented by an economic feasibility evaluation. A description of the solar d ome dryer is also presented.

    Improved methods of preparation, dressing, salting and drying of sharks are presented in this paper. Demonstration trials of the improved methodology were conducted in Aden; a solar dome dryer was used for drying. Results of the trials are analysed and discussed; a set of recommendations are included.

    Available literature concerning the Red Sea commercial fisheries is examined, from which a summary of information concerning catches, catch rates, species compositions, extent and locations of fishing grounds and stock assessments is presented, in respect to each main category of fisheries type and country. It is tentatively concluded that the potential Red Sea yield is some 160.000 tons annually, of which 56% is expected to result from the application of artisanal methods, 23% from trawling and the rest possibly from purse seining. The southern half of the Red Sea is seen as considerably more productive than the northern part, with the exception of the Gulf of Suez.

    The paper presents the final report of the master fisherman who joined the Project (RAB/81/002) during December 1982. His duty station was Port Sudan, with sub-stations at Mohammed Qol and Arakiyia, plus other fishing camps. He replaced the previous master fisherman who had left in August, 1982. His terms of reference with: assisting the Cooperatives in the operation of fishing boats and handling, storing, transporting and marketing their catch; maintaining of the Project boats and fishing equip ment provided to the sub-station, either by the FAO or the Government; designing, constructing and maintaining relevant, improved or new fishing gear; introducing of proven modifications or innovations into the existing fishery, through demonstration and on-the-job training of fishermen and extension workers; continually assessing the fishing situation and conditions in the areas of his activities; identifying technical shortcomings and the needs as felt by the fishermen and their communities, a nd assisting in the formulation of local fishery development activities, taking into account related socio-economic factors and utilization distribution aspects; performing other related duties as identified by himself or the Project manager, and keeping all people concerned continually informed of his activities.
