    This document assembles the reports on the marine shrimp and groundfish fisheries of northern Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and eastern Venezuela prepared for and during the third Workshop on the Assessment of Shrimp and Groundfish Fisheries on the Brazil-Guianas Shelf, held in Belém, Brazil, from 24 May to 10 June 1999. Section 2 includes papers dealing with overviews of important shrimp and groundfish resources and their fisheries. Section 3 deals wit h fisheries management practices in the area in the context of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Sections 4 and 5 contain papers on stock assessment methodology applicable in the region. Sections 6 to 18 deal with national or sub-regional assessments of selected shrimp and groundfish fisheries. Section 17 also deals with the bio-economics of shrimp fisheries in general and in particular with seasonality, risk and uncertainty. Section 19 is a report of a task group on sna pper fisheries of the Brazil-Guianas Shelf, it includes a discussion on future management measures. Section 20 contains a report on a meeting where the results of assessments were presented to the fisheries managers and recommendations were drafted for follow-up activities. The names and addresses of the various authors can be obtained from the section headings and the list of participants in Section 22. There is an extensive list of references in Section 21.

    The Workshop was organized within the framework of the FAO/WECAFC ad hoc Working Group on Shrimp and Groundfish resources of the Brazil-Guianas Shelf that was established in 1984 at the recommendation of the WECAF Commission, given the nature and characteristics of the fisheries resources in this region. The Group has been meeting yearly since 1996 to undertake stock assessments of the main commercial species of shrimp and groundfish. One of the main objectives was to use the results o f these assessments to investigate alternative options for managing these fisheries and to provide scientific advice for management. These stock assessment workshops were facilitated by FAO, through its Regular Programme and inter-regional Projects GCP/INT/575/DEN – “Training in Tropical Fish Stock Assessment” and GCP/INT/648/NOR- “Assistance to Developing Countries for the Implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries” and CFRAMP (CARICOM Fisheries Resources Assess ment and Management Programme).

    The report provides a summary of the proceedings of the Fourth Meeting of the WECAFC Ad Hoc Shrimp and Groundfish Working Group on the Guianas-Brazil Continental Shelf and CFRAMP Shrimp and Groundfish Subproject Specification Workshop. It contains summaries of the national reports and technical papers presented during the meeting. A Supplement to this report will reproduce the papers presented at the Meeting. The major topics discussed included priority areas for a co-operative investigation programme and proposals for CFRAMP sponsored stock assessment and data collection activities. The main recommendations and priority areas for collaboration approved by the Meeting are included in the report. The Workshop agreed that enough data and information exist to do a preliminary stock assessment of the shrimp resources of the region and recommended that the next meeting of the Working Group should attempt this task. Bio-economic analysis of the available fisheries data in the countries was considered priority, through which optimal data requirements for the countries could be identified and alternative management strategies evaluated.
