Synopsis (short abstract) Global paddy production in the 2000 rice season, about to be concluded, is currently estimated at 594 million tonnes, or 17 million tonnes less than the record achieved in 1999. The fall reflects the general weakness of prices, which has encouraged a shift towards other crops, weather-related problems in some areas and changes in China’s cereal policies, which have prompted a cut in plantings.

    Planting of the 2001 paddy season is underway in some of the Northern Hemisphere countries but the bulk of the crop is yet to be planted pending the arrival of Monsoon rains on th e Asian continent. In the Southern Hemisphere and around the equatorial belt, this season’s main paddy crop is nearing completion. Following weak prices in the past two years, some countries are expected to lower rice area and to switch to more remunerative crops. Nonetheless, pending additional information and assuming normal seasonal weather patterns, world paddy production in 2001 is expected to decline only marginally from the previous season.

    In the Southern Hemisphere and around the equatorial belt, harvesting of the 2001 mainpaddy season is about to be completed, while in the Northern Hemisphere, planting of the main crops is underway. The outlook for global paddy production 2001 is somewhat mixed. Self-sufficiency programmes in several countries appear to be assisted by a combination of timely seasonal weather, larger plantings and expected payoffs from investments in crop infrastructure and improved input usage.

    FAO’s forecast for world paddy output in 2001 have been raised by 3.4 million tonnes from the previous outlook, mainly on account of upward adjustments in Bangladesh, India and China. At the forecast level of 590.2 million tonnes, global paddy production would be almost 6 million tonnes, or 1 percent below the level harvested in 2000.
