Synopsis (short abstract) This is the final report of the thirty-third session of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) convened in Hyderabad, India from 23 to 25 June 2014. The Commission reviewed the status and potential of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific as well as activities carried out since the previous session. Member countries reported on national efforts undertaken in support of the recommendations of previous APFIC sessions. Other topics discussed included guidelines for responsible trop ical trawl management, promotion of the sustainable intensification of aquaculture, and the role of anchored artisanal fish aggregating devices and artificial reefs in improving livelihoods. Development of training courses for the ecosystem approach to fishery management and for port inspections of fishing vessels were discussed. The session concluded with adoption of the work plan for the coming biennium.

As the world’s fishery resources and the aquatic ecosystems become increasingly threatened by pollution, habitat destruction, climate change and overfishing, there is a need to address the long-term sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Resource mobilization is an important element to assist countries attain their sustainable development goals. When developed and implemented in a collaborative and coordinated manner, external funding can provide excellent catalytic or up-scaling funds to innovative approaches at the regional and local levels.
