However, simple provision of technologies no longer has a major impact in many countries and identifying appropriate interventions requires the monitoring of global trends, identification of the most appropriate institutional frameworks and assessment of the implications of policies, all of which require trans-sectoral knowledge.

Evaluation reportEvaluation of FAO’s work in commodities and trade 2007The work of the FAO Trade and Markets Division is geared toward helping member countries, particularly developing countries, increase income from trade in agricultural commodities and participate in international trade negotiations such as those under the World Trade Organization. Over the last decade, FAO has had to review its basic function and roles in these areas in light of international trends, in particular the move away from controlled commodity markets and government commodity trading a nd the increasing globalisation of agricultural production and trade.

Corporate strategy D, “Conserving and Enhancing Sustainable use of the Natural Resource Base”, is broken down into two strategic objectives: D1 “Integrated Management of Land, Water, Fisheries, Forest and Genetic Resources” and D2 “Conservation, Rehabilitation and Development of Environments at the Greatest Risk”.
