Synopsis (short abstract) Despite a significant potential for innovation and digitalization in the agrifood systems of Pacific SIDS, and the power of digital tools in aiding development efforts, the operating themes of agrifood systems, digitalization and gender empowerment are still in their infancy in the Pacific region, which also faces challenges such as remoteness, limited capacities and natural disasters. Acknowledging the need for development partners to invest in the enabling environment to achieve more impactful results, the subprogramme focused on advancing digitisation of gender-sensitive agrifood systems in eight target countries, namely the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. Investing in digital literacy for women and youth was expected to yield immediate results through a practice-based approach. The subprogramme aimed to leverage local creativity in digitalization, attract financial partnerships and address the gender divide while complementing ongoing efforts in the targeted countries.

    This desk review provides an overview of the existing knowledge exchange platforms in SIDS, with a particular emphasis on identifying the gaps that the proposed FAO platform will fill as a complementary platform. This paper is neither an evaluation of the existing knowledge exchange platforms in SIDS nor an academic paper, which could easily provide critiques as an intellectual exercise. Instead, the paper is policy research driven for government, development partners and private-sector readership. This review is limited to the identification of existing knowledge exchange platforms promoting innovation and digitalization within the context of agriculture, food, nutrition, health and the environment. Conversely, to remain aligned with the phase approach of SIDS Solutions Platform development, the review is focused on the Pacific SIDS, as well as the Maldives because of geographic proximity.

    Building Capacities to Develop Gender-Sensitive Climate Change Adaptation Proposals for Funding Consideration in Caribbean Small Island Developing States - GCP/SLC/019/CAN 2022

    Owing to their small size, position in tropical cyclone belts and dependence on agriculture and tourism, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its effects. The agrifood systems of these countries require adaptive measures to support resilience to climate change and sustainability to ensure food and nutrition security and to reduce the impacts of climate change on vulnerable groups, including women and Indigenous Peoples. This project was designed to support efforts to increase adaptive measures in targeted SIDS (Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname) by building national capacities to develop concept notes and full proposals for gender sensitive climate adaptation projects, so that these countries can access climate and environmental financing through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
