Synopsis (short abstract) The Codex Secretariat conducts a yearly survey for all Codex Members to measure the use and impact of Codex texts. Mandated to monitor this topic through the Codex Strategic Plan 2020–2025, in 2021, the Secretariat, in collaboration with FAO and WHO evaluation offices, began developing a mechanism to explore issues such as accessibility, relevance and credibility concerning Codex standards. The 2022 survey served as the pilot for this new endeavour. The report of the Codex Survey 2022 presents the results of the first pilot survey on the use and impact of Codex texts. The survey focused on the following Codex texts: General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed, General Principles of Food Hygiene, General Standard for the Labelling of Pre-packaged Foods, and General Principles for the Addition of Essential Nutrients to Foods.   It provides information on the outreach, relevance, recognition and use of Codex texts, and ultimately on their impact. The report highlights barriers to the uptake of Codex texts by Members and makes a series of recommendations.

    The Codex Secretariat conducts a yearly survey for all Codex Members to measure the use and impact of Codex texts. This report provides information on the outreach, relevance, recognition and use of Codex texts, and ultimately on their impact. The report highlights barriers to the uptake of Codex texts by Members and draws conclusions and lessons learned.The 2024 Codex Member Survey represents the third iteration of this annual data collection effort, building on the foundations laid in 2022 and 2023. The report presents general results of the use and impact of Codex texts as well as specific results on the following Codex texts: Code of practice to minimize and contain foodborne antimicrobial resistance (CXC 61-2021); Maximum residue limits (MRLs) and risk management recommendations (RMRs) for residues of veterinary drugs in foods (CXM 2-2024); Working principles for risk analysis for food safety for application by governments (CXG 62-2007); and Principles and guidelines for national food control systems (CXG 82-2013).

    This publication sets out to explore the issue of harmonization of national pesticides Maximum Residues Limits (MRLs) with Codex pesticide MRLs from different angles, by taking rice as a case study. Part A identifies the level of harmonization in main rice producing and trading countries and explores the possible effects on trade, while Part B investigates the reasons behind differing levels of harmonization. Its broader objective is to offer insights for decision-makers involved in setting of standards and design of food policy at national and international level on the significance of harmonization of pesticide MRLs.
