    This paper describes small-scale oyster culture trials carried out in the states of Kedah and Perak on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Rafts and longlines were found to be economically viable and the technology was transferred to fishermen. Spat of the slipper oyster, Crassostrea iredalei, were transplanted from the east coast of peninsular Malaysia to the west coast sites. Small-scale depuration units were established at farm sites and a series of market promotions successfully un dertaken. Hatchery seed production and remote setting were done by biologists and staff of the Fisheries Research Institute with assistance from temporarily hired field biologists. Artificial spat production was necessary to supplement short supplies of wild spat. The trials were undertaken from 1988 till mid-1993 as a BOBP subproject under the regional project “Small- scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal” (GCP/RAS/ll8/MUL) funded by DANIDA (Danish International Development Assistance) and SIDA (Swedish International Development Authority).

    This document records the reéommendations of the 21st Meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Bay of Bengal Programme for Coastal Fisheries Management (BOBP). The meeting was held 12-13 February, 1997 in Bangkok, Thailand. The document also contains the annual reports of the projects that comprise the BOBP. These reports summarize the objectives of the projects and their current status; the work performed and the achievements during 1996, an evaluation of progress, and workplans for 1997. The Advisory Committee is composed of member-countries, agencies funding BOBP projects, and the FAO. The Committee meets once a year by rotation in membercountries.

    This document records the recommendations of the twelfth meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Bay of Bengal Programme for Fisheries Development (BOBP), held January 12-15,1988 in Bhubaneswar, India. The document also includes the annual report for 1987 and the work plan for 1988, as endorsed by the committee, of the project “Small-scale fisherfolk communities in the Bay of Bengal”, GCP/RAS/118/MUL. This project is the main component of the BOBP and became operational in 1987 with fundin g by DANIDA and SIDA. An outline of the Post-Harvest Fisheries Project, executed and funded by ODA (U.K.) under the BOBP umbrella, is also found in the document. This project also became operational in 1987.
