Synopsis (short abstract) A census of agriculture is a large-scale periodic statistical operation for the collection of quantitative information on the structure of a nation's agricultural sector. A major component of this multifaceted economic sector is agricultural labour. Guidelines on employment is a supplement to the definitions. The primary objective is to measure amount of labour resources used on an agricultural holding and to define the type, level, and source of inputs contributing to its agricultural production, its investments and its maintenance.

    The Statistical Development Series is a sequence of comprehensive technical manuals on various aspects of the statistical programmes which make up a national information system for food and agriculture. Emphasis in these manuals is placed on the standardization of concepts and efforts to integrate statistical programmes and minimize duplications. The organization of agricultural censuses is one of the important parts of national programmes and is the subject of a separate publication entitled Programme for the 1990 World Census of Agriculture. Following the recommendations of regional statistical Statutory Bodies of FAO, regional supplements are prepared to provide recommendations on subjects particular to individual regions. The present volume is the Supplement for Asia and the Pacific.

    The present “Supplement to the Report on the 1990 WCA” presents the census results collected from the reports issued by the countries that conducted censuses during the 1986-1995 decade and made them available to FAO after mid-1997. This publication also provides, in an internationally comparable form, a summary of data describing the main characteristics of the structure of agriculture, such as number and area of agricultural holdings, land tenure, agricultural holders and land use for 90 count ries; and includes comparable data for those countries conducting a census of agriculture during the period 1930-1990.
