Synopsis (short abstract) The electronic newsletter from the FAO Representation in Georgia features the following articles: 1. EU representatives and Georgia’s Minister review EU-supported agriculture and rural development initiatives. EU-funded and supported agricultural and rural development programmes in Georgia, including wine sector reform initiated by FAO under the European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD), were the main topics of discussion during the high-profile meeting. 2.Dairy Congress kicks off next phase of EU-FAO-EBRD support to Georgian milk producers. The benefits of cooperation and opportunities for small and medium-sized dairy enterprises topped the agenda of the Second Caucasus Dairy Congress held in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. 3. UN Sustainable Development Goals workshop held at Geostat. FAO is holding a three-day seminar at Geostat on SDG indicators under FAO custodianship. 4. Georgia and Armenia meet to discuss veterinary medicine and public healthcare trans-border issues. A trans-border meeting was held to discuss issues related to veterinary medicine and public healthcare. 5. ENPARD stakeholders discuss future development of Local Action Groups in Georgia. FAO brought together the stake-holders and implementing partners of the Euro-pean Neighbourhood Programme for Agricul-ture and Rural Development (ENPARD) for the 16th ENPARD stakeholders’ meeting. 6. Tajik officials learn from Georgian peers in FAO study tour. Senior staff members of Tajikistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and its Statistics Agency visited Georgia to meet with representatives of the National Statistics Office and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture in Georgia.

    The electronic newsletter from the FAO Representation in Georgia features the following articles: 1.Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representation in Georgia hosted a two-day visit of Moldovan delegates to Georgia to share information, recommendations and lessons learned while implementing the EU-funded projects under European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD). 2. Creating an online library to make modern agricultural advice handbooks and guidebooks available for Georgian farmers, extension specialists and all the interested parties – this was one of the main topics of the meeting organized by FAO and the Working Group on Extension (WGE) of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. 3. EU-funded projects with budget of EUR 22 million (approx. GEL 60 million) implemented by FAO and UNDP will provide direct assistance to rural communities and support Georgian and Ajara Autonomous Republic governments on sustainable agriculture and rural development policy. 4. Fish and fish products are among the most widely traded food commodities in the world, with trade totaling around US$ 145 billion per year. Demand is especially strong in Europe. Market access and regional trade in fish products in Eastern Europe – especially with regard to the World Trade Organization – are the focus of a three-day workshop in Serbia.

    The electronic newsletter from the FAO Representation in Georgia features the following articles: 1. Greater competitiveness of Georgian agriculture is the objective of a new, Euro 12 million project under the third phase of the EU-funded European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD), implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). 2. The two year Equal Access of IDPs to Economic Opportunities project was funded by the EU and implemented by FAO in cooperation with UN Women, and focused on developing livelihoods of the most vulnerable groups of IDPs, namely single parents with minors, households with members with disabilities, and households led by youths and the elderly.  The project provided training and over GEL 4 million to help these families undertake investments in mechanization, orchards, vineyards, honey and dairy productions.  In total, 830 IDP households across Georgia benefitted from the project.  3. FAO has pledged US$100 000 to help the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation develop and strengthen agrifood trade in the Black Sea region. An agreement to this effect was signed in December 2017 by FAO and the Permanent International Secretariat of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC).
