FAO strategy / plan / policy / roadmapUnited Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 - Global Action Plan 2019Agriculture today faces increasing pressure to provide sufficient, affordable and nutritious food for a growing population, cope with climate change and the degradation of natural resources, including water scarcity, soil depletion, and biodiversity loss. Pervasive inequalities between rural and urban areas have led to an unprecedented level of urbanization. To feed the world and do it sustainably, an urgent and radical shift in our food systems is necessary. To be effective, transformative actions must address a complex set of interconnected objectives encompassing economic, social and environmental dimensions. Family farmers are at the heart of this issue. They provide the majority of the world’s food, are the major investors in agriculture and the backbone of the rural economic structure. The Global Action Plan of the UNDFF provides detailed guidance for the international community on collective, coherent and comprehensive actions that can be taken to support family farmers. It outlines a comprehensive approach to support efforts to achieve the SDGs, in the context of the progressive realization of the Right to Adequate Food. Designed around seven mutually reinforcing pillars of work, the Global Action Plan recommends a series of interconnected actions from the local to the global level. Any interventions developed during the decade must always consider the diversity of family farmers. They should be context-specific, adapted to regional, national, local socio-cultural and socio-economic conditions. To guarantee the success of the UNDFF, all actions should place family farmers at the center and be implemented through bottom-up, participatory and inclusive processes.

No results found.The goals of poverty eradication and of promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production constitute the overarching framework and the rationale of the new global development agenda. In this context, FAO restates its commitment to achieving these goals, while sustaining the legacy of the International Year of Family Farming, through its strategic goal of reducing rural poverty in support to of family farmers and smallholder agriculture. As part of the strategy, it is fundamental to re cognize global and regional structural transformations and related policy trends in the field of family farming, as well as partnerships with key players influencing regional and national processes. The workshop “Support to Family farming and small scale agriculture to achieve rural poverty reduction. Opportunities and priorities to Strengthen FAO Regional Initiatives” will focus on assessing the trends in family farming and debating the strategy and achievements of the three FAO Regional Initia tives (RIs) related to family farming and smallholders. It will assess the impacts and gaps in FAO’s assistance to countries, identifying areas of focus to scale up the work at the policy level and promote the collaboration across regions to improve results. -

No results found.Family farms feed and employ two-thirds of the African population and work 62 percent of the land. Family farmers ensure the future of Africa and are at the heart of food security and sustainable food systems. The review updates the information on the situation of family farming in Ghana, offers a critical look from the perspective of the different actors about the progress and challenges it faces. In particular, it makes an approach to public policies and national action plans in force or in process in the country and the importance of their implementation. In the same way, it places the producer organizations that group the farming families present at the national level, whose objective is the strengthening and resilience of family farming within the framework of sustainable agri-food systems. The country review emphasizes the Decade of Family Farming (2019–2028), and contributes substantively to Pillar 4 “Strengthening organizations of family farmers and their capacity to generate knowledge, represent their members and provide inclusive services in the urban-rural areas ”. The publication represents a transversal communicational section within the framework of the multi-stakeholder amalgam of family farming, summarizes the current situation and presents future problems. It is intended to fill the existing information gaps in rural areas. Within this framework, the Yenkasa Africa communication initiative implements a regional campaign to raise awareness on the UNDFF and promote improved communication capacities and services for family farming in Ghana.
