Technical bookSelecting value chains for sustainable food value chain development
Guidelines
2021Also available in:
No results found.Value chain development can make significant contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because it is a powerful approach to address root causes and binding constraints that impede the sustainable development of food value chains. The first step in value chain development is selecting those value chains that, when upgraded, can have the biggest SDG impact. This publication provides practical guidelines on how to select value chains for which upgrading is feasible and impactful in terms of the potential for generating positive economic, social and environmental outcomes. The handbook describes a step-by-step process that helps to assess, compare and select value chains in a participatory and evidence-based manner. It presents a toolbox that can be customized to projects with different budgets, scopes and objectives. This publication forms part of a set of FAO handbooks on Sustainable Food Value Chain (SFVC) development, which together provide hands-on guidance for development practitioners, including international organizations, NGOs, regional bodies and national governments seeking to achieve sustainability objectives through agrifood value chain development projects. -
Technical bookSustainable value chains for sustainable food systems 2016
Also available in:
No results found. The FAO/UNEP programme organized, in June 2016, a workshop on “Sustainable Value Chains for Sustainable Food Systems”. The sessions of the workshop examined the potential contributions of the organization, functioning and governance of food value chains with respect to the sustainability of food systems. It aimed to better frame the notion of “sustainable value chain”. The various interventions approached sustainability by diverse entry points, from environmental to social issues, at very divers e scales, from local markets to globally traded commodities. Most of them show practical solutions and good practices as well as the conditions for their implementation. This publication is a compilation of the papers presented at the workshop, including a summary. It aims to stimulate reflection and exchanges among stakeholders and to facilitate the design of appropriate pathways towards more sustainable food chains, contributing to sustainable food systems. -
Technical bookGender and food loss in sustainable food value chains
A guiding note
2018This publication aims to help policy-makers, project designers and field practitioners to conceptualize the nexus between gender equality and food loss while offering practical guidance on and tools for integrating gender concerns into the planning and implementation of food loss studies and reduction strategies and interventions. By linking key concepts from gender-sensitive value chain development and the issue of food loss, it emerges that gender inequalities affect the overall efficiency of the food value chain and generate a poor performance that may cause produce to be removed from the chain. The publication provides critical information and entry points for food loss reduction interventions that improve the way women and men participate in and benefit from food production.
