Synopsis (short abstract) This practice documents the work of PRADAN (Professional Assistance for Development Action), a leading NGO in India, in organizing and supporting rural women to take up poultry rearing and develop this into a successful market-linked enterprise. Women poultry rearers have been organised into a Poultry Producers’ Cooperative in the district of Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh. Through the cooperative, these women have been successfully linked to a remunerative though volatile poultry market. In addition, the collective institutional structure has facilitated skill and knowledge building on improved management and rearing practices, and also disease control. This practice documents the processes adopted by the women poultry rearers to break market entry barriers and become a viable and sustainable enterprise.

    This practice highlights the positive outcomes of the promotion of backyard poultry farming in West Bengal. In addition to improving the production and supply of eggs and poultry meat, interventions generated self-employment leading to a reduction in rural poverty and the empowerment of rural women. The practice documents one of the Familybased Poultry Distribution Schemes of the Government of West Bengal under which poultry birds are distributed to poor rural households throughout the State. The practice as well highlights the contribution of the scheme in poverty reduction and improvement in household food supplies.

    Against the backdrop of one of the worst droughts in history, attributed to the El Niño event, a total of 52 of the 63 provinces (83 percent) of Viet Nam were affected by drought in 2016, and 18 provinces were declared to be in a State of Emergency at the peak of the drought in May 2016. The latest assessments (in October 2016) showed that in the three most affected regions of the country, namely the Central Highlands, Central and Mekong Delta regions, the lack of water (also as a result of salt intrusion) caused significant damage/losses, 45 percent of which were related to the 2016 main winter/spring paddy crops and 50 percent to the livestock, mainly poultry, pigs, sheep and goats. National/local authorities and farmers, who had not experienced this level of severity of drought and salinity intrusion before, were not sufficiently prepared to address the situation. The project worked towards restoring the agriculturebased livelihoods of poor farming households in the six most affected provinces, through the distribution of livestock and animal feed, and the provision of good husbandry and biosecurity training to extension workers and affected farmers.
