The Stakeholder Meeting to Present and Discuss the FAO Study Report on Cross-Border Trade in Artisanal Smoked Fish in West Africa was jointly organized by the Value Chain Development Team (NFIMV) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the FAO Representation in Togo (FAOTG). The Meeting aimed to share, discuss and validate the results of this study report, and to gather further recommendations from the various stakeholders. It also paved the way for the development of a strategic plan to guide the way forward in improving cross-border trade in smoked fish and strengthening trade integration in the subregion in light of the recommendations made and the opportunities offered by regional fish trade, in particular the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The meeting included a session of ten thematic presentations, group sessions on key policy recommendations, as well as concluding remarks and next steps. It was attended by 27 representatives of fisheries ministries, fish processors and traders from the five countries concerned (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo), and FAO representatives.

The third meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 22 to 23 October 2004. The meeting was the third of its kind, following two meetings in Dakar, Senegal, from 26 to 28 October 2002 and from 28 to 29 October 2003. The scientists from the Northwest African region expressed their commitment to conduct their own acoustic surveys. All of the local research vessels conducted acoustic surveys in 2004. The a bility of running acoustic surveys in the sub-region has developed to a good level and focus in the future should be on the development of human capacity and to resolve the recurrent technical problems of trawl performance, noise discrimination and data storage. The timeframe of the continued surveys with R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and the support through the Nansen Programme is unknown and high priority must therefore be given to the improvement of scientists skills in acoustic abundan ce estimation.
