Synopsis (short abstract) Enhanced efforts of farmers in Cote d’lvoire in the application of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) technologies and practices will remain key to the realisation of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets in climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as food security. This brochure provides baseline information on CSA technologies being practiced in Cote d’lvoire and presents the status of the country with regard to financing, institutions and policies for promotion of CSA. These are presented with statistics to show compelling contextual issues of economic relevance of agriculture, food security, agricultural production systems, challenges, and the country specific data on agriculture and climate change in Cote d’lvoire. On the practical side, the brochure provides options and useful indications for CSA mainstreaming in the country.

    The present technical study provides the results and a summary of the most important lessons learned from implementation of a series of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices in the rice supply chains of Gagnoa in Côte d’Ivoire. The aim of the CSA practices was to enhance the adaptive capacity of the rice sector against climate change, as erratic rainfall patterns and droughts events have, historically, significantly impacted production. This study relies on data collected at farm and processing levels during two field missions to two pilot sites in August 2017 and September 2018 under the project “Contribution à l’atteinte des objectifs liés au changement climatique et à la sécurité alimentaire via l’agriculture intelligente face au climat en Côte d’Ivoire – cas de la filière riz”. This project is a technical cooperation project implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from 2016 and 2018. The study provides a series of recommendations for policymakers, including incentives for the development of a modern bioenergy sector in Côte d’Ivoire which are still nascent.

On the practical side, the brochure provides options and useful indications for CSA mainstreaming in the country. By supporting the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation programmes and policies, CSA initiatives will play a key role in the implementation of Benin’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

    Les changements climatiques menacent la sécurité alimentaire en Côte d’Ivoire. Le secteur vivrier, en particulier la riziculture, est fortement tributaire des facteurs climatiques. Les rendements sont faibles du fait de la capacité limitée des riziculteurs à mettre en œuvre des pratiques agricoles appropriées, notamment d’agriculture intelligente face au climat (AIC), susceptibles de contribuer à atténuer les émissions de gaz à effet de serre dans la filière riz. Par ailleurs, les résidus et sous-produits de la filière riz ne sont pas suffisamment valorisés et pourraient être utilisés pour la production de bioénergie. Le projet visait à contribuer à la diffusion de techniques d’AIC, y compris la production de bioénergie à partir des résidus et sous-produits de la filière riz, afin de parvenir à un changement de pratiques, techniques ou habitudes culturales et réduire la vulnérabilité climatique et économique des riziculteurs et transformateurs.
