Synopsis (short abstract) Nearly 1 million people are still displaced inside CAR or seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. The number of hungry people has doubled in 1 year, as conflict and insecurity have led to limited access to and availability of food. People need food to survive, and seeds and tools for planting so that they have food at the next harvest. This means that when times are tough and food is scarce, families don’t have to resort to eating the seeds that are meant for planting. The UN’s Food and Agricu lture Organization and the World Food Programme are working together in CAR to improve farming communities’ access to food. Each year starting in 2014, WFP and FAO work in synch to provide seeds and food to nearly 100 000 hungry farming families before their planting season starts. WFP provides groundnuts, maize, rice, sorghum, and beans for families to prepare meals to eat now and during the growing season. FAO provides crop and vegetable seeds for sowing to the same families so they can eat in the future too. FAO and WFP have about half of the funding that they need for the upcoming planting season. People in CAR cannot afford to receive only 1/2 of the support they need.

Following a request from the Government of the Central African Republic, a joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) visited the country from 26 October to 28 November 2015 to estimate crop production and assess the overall food security situation. In addition to FAO and WFP, the Mission’s field teams included representatives from the Ministry of Rural Development, the Bureau of Statistics, four international NGOs (PU-AMI, Solidarités international, COOPI, TGH) and 8 nation al NGOs (Calebasse, ONFR-FC, GEPAD, GAPAFOT, ARND, Echelle, Kwa Ti Yaka, LIFA).

Since the first COVID-19 cases were reported in the country, the Government has taken several urgent and essential health-related measures to mitigate the spread, including border closures, movement restrictions between Bangui and the largest towns in the East, the closure of the national airport and increased controls at the border with Cameroon. The effects of the essential restrictions have exacerbated the slowdown in food commodity imports and there have been major supply chain disruptions. The majority of imports are now coming from Cameroon due to the closure of borders with other countries, but a two-week delay in supply has been observed due to increased border controls, which created shortage in supply in Bangui as well as in other provinces. In the framework of FAO’s Corporate COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme and the United Nations Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19, FAO has revised its humanitarian response for 2020 to mitigate the effects of the pandemic and address the needs of the most vulnerable households.
