Synopsis (short abstract) The paper evaluates the existing status of fisheries statistics in PDRY and describes the type of fishery data that are needed for economic evaluation of fisheries and biological/stock assessment studies. A phased plan of development of an adequate statistical system extending over a period of three years is proposed. The system is based on regional concepts and uniform definitions of statistical items to facilitate inter and intra country comparability of the collected fishery data. The methods of collection of data are furnished in details; the facility requirement by way of man-power and equipment is examined. The cost estimate for running the three year programme is worked out and the potential benefits are indicated.

    According to the project document, the immediate objective are to aim at improving fishery production in the participating countries to benefit small scale fisheries and at developing the industrial potential; to prepare the ground, identify the means and initiate the reactivation and expansion of the existing marine fisheries and thereby to preserve the fishing communities; and to plan and, where appropriate, design and initiate investment-oriented development schemes. To survey the socio-econo mic aspects of the Red Sea fishing communities in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, various visits were arranged to these groups along the coast.
