Pelagic longline fishery activities of Reunion Island are monitored since 2011 by the self-reporting data collection program (SRP) that covered 12% of the total fishing effort in 2011-2012. Fishermen report in SRP various informations on fishing locations, gear used, catch, discards and depredation. We used these data to assess the levels and distribution of commercial catch and discards between mid-2011 and mid-2013. We found that the catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of swordfish (target species ) has decreased since 2011 as long as the overall profitability of this fishery including other commercial species and taxa: yellowfin tu, bigeye tu, albacore tu, dolphinfish and billfish. Discards were mostly blue sharks (38%), pelagic stingrays (24%) and a generic group of very long fish usually called snooks by fishermen (20%). In this context of overall decrease of fishery profitability, fishing on the east coast of Madagascar between July and September still remains a profitable strategy wh ile byctach rate of discards is reasobly low. Albacore tu season occurring the last quarter of the year also remains profitable with high albacore CPUE levels near Reunion Island and below average rate of discarded bycatch.

Climate Smart Agriculture Curriculum/Module for B. Agr. Sc. and M. Agr. Sc Degree Programme at Yezin Agricultural University in Myanmar 2019
    Also available in:

The FAO is implementing a project entitled “Sustainable cropland and forest management in priority agro-ecosystems of Myanmar (SLM-GEF)” in coordination with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MoNREC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALI) with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project promotes climate smart agriculture (CSA) policies and practices at different levels in Myanmar. One of the key activities of the project is to establish a national CSA/SLM training program mainstreaming CSA/SLM in the agriculture related academic courses and trainings conducted by Yezin Agricultural University (YAU), State Agricultural Institutes (SAI), Department of Agriculture (DoA) and Department of Agriculture Research (DAR).  In order to integrate CSA within the research, extension, training and development programs, the project has made efforts to revise/develop the curricula integrating CSA topics for example: i) CSA component integrated into the Masters and Bachelor level courses on Agriculture at YAU;  ii) CSA component integrated into the Diploma in Agriculture course at SAIs; iii) one month training on CSA together with other subjects for the in-service or refresher course at Central Agriculture Research and Training Centre (CARTC) under DoA and iv) one week intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) programme aiming for the researchers, extension agents and teachers of DoA, DAR and YAU. This document/curriculum will serve as the main reference document for professors/lectureres/teachers from the different Depaartments at YAU to include the related topics on CSA into their courses for teaching the students of the Masters and Bachelor level courses on Agriculture at YAU.

The Multicountry Programming Framework for the Pacific Islands (Pacific CPF) 2023–2027 is a strategic plan designed by the FAO to drive agrifood systems transformation and rural development in the Pacific Islands. It builds upon the achievements and lessons learned from the previous 2018–2022 Pacific CPF, emphasizing stakeholder engagement, programmatic approach, and sustainability. Derived from the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the Pacific Islands (Pacific UNSDCF) 2023–2027, the Pacific CPF aligns with FAO's commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and focuses on key SDGs such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Life below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). By leveraging partnerships and prioritizing sustainable practices, this framework aims to address the unique challenges faced by the Pacific Islands and contribute to their long-term development.
