Synopsis (short abstract) The Republic of Malawi is a landlocked country situated in South-eastern Africa. The country has very large fresh-water resources and a high agricultural potential. The population, very young and predominantly rural, is growing rapidly. The Malawian economy is largely based on agriculture. Most of the population is engaged in the agricultural sector, which accounts for more than one third of GDP. Smallholder rain-fed maize production is largely predominant and the livestock sub-sector remains un derdeveloped. Economic growth, highly dependent on the agricultural sector, is constrained by a high vulnerability to climatic shocks which affect the country frequently. Poverty is widespread in the rural population. Moreover, the incidence of poverty is not declining. Nevertheless, during the last two years the country has experienced bumper crops for maize due to favourable climatic conditions and an input subsidy scheme that has reached a very large number of small farmers.

    The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked mountainous country located in the North-eastern horn of Africa. Ethiopia, which is the second most populated country in Sub-Saharan Africa, is experiencing rapid population growth. The population is very young and is one of the least urbanized in the world. Ethiopia is heavily dependant on the agricultural sector which accounts for almost half of the GDP. About three-quarters of the population are engaged in agriculture, mainly in subs istence and rain-fed farming and livestock production. Since 2000, the economy has been growing steadily. However, Ethiopia remains one of the poorest nations in the world, with almost a quarter of Ethiopians living with less than 1$ a day.

    The Republic of Zambia is a landlocked country in South-central Africa with a mild tropical climate. It is sparsely populated compared to some of the neighbouring countries. The population is young and predominantly rural. Zambia is severely affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which compromises social and economic gains the country is striving to attain. Mostly as a result of pandemic, life expectancy at birth has dropped sharply.

    Kenya is a country with a predominantly rural and very young population. About 80% of the land area is arid and semi-arid, mainly in the northern and eastern regions. Areas with a good agricultural potential represent only about 18% of the territory but support 80% of the population. Agriculture, mainly rainfed, is the main sector of the Kenyan economy. The country is recurrently affected by drought, floods and environmental degradation due to over-exploitation of natural resources.
