GuidelineSome introductory guidelines to management of shrimp fisheries 1972
Also available in:
No results found. The paper describes the benefits that can be achieved from proper management of shrimp resources and the problems involved in achieving this. In the absence of management, fishing will expand to the level where it is no longer profitable; at this level the catch may be less than with reduced fishing, and the costs very much greater. Implementation of management is easier if early consideration is given to the problems involved. Early action is also necessary to collect the basic data required la ter to assess the stock and determine precise management measures. The possible management measures include protection of the small shrimp, e.g., through the prohibition of fishing at certain places or seasons, and the direct control of the amount of fishing or the capacity of the fleet, e.g., by license limitations. The choice of the latter control, including the conditions under which licenses may be held, will depend on the use that is to be made of the considerable surplus that can occur of the value of the catch over the minimum costs of harvest. Management of the shrimp fishery should look into the need to make the best use of the fish that are caught incidentally when shrimp fishing. The quantities involved can be considerable. Proposals are made for this and for progressive step-wise approach to the management of a developing shrimp fishery. -
