Synopsis (short abstract) Access to food in markets is hindered by high food prices, conflicts and civil insecurity: during the reporting period (May-August), sorghum (Feterita) prices increased by 20% in Khartoum. Between August and September the number of food insecure people has dramatically increased to 4.5 million; agencies agree that the food security situation is critical. Conflicts in Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile are causing massive displacements, but restrictions on access severely limited humanitar ian organisations' response. International agencies call for urgent action to prevent a looming humanitarian and food crisis in the two strife-affected regions of Blue Nile and South Kordofan. FAO is distributing vegetable seeds and tools to vulnerable households.

    Prices of sorghum, millet and wheat steadily increased in most markets due to shortages in the 2011 production. Wheat prices, not only have shown a volatile trend, but were also nearly three times higher than international prices. About 3.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Moreover, as the lean season will start earlier than usual, the number is expected to increase further. Conflict in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, severely affects food security conditions , particularly constraining access to food of poorer households. The government has imposed restrictions to the delivery of emergency assistance to the conflict-affected population in the southern region.

    Prices of wheat and rice in Karachi and Lahore went up between May and September 2011. The high food prices contribute to deteriorating food security conditions. More than 8.9 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh and Balochistan. Floods have destroyed some 2.1 million acres of crops in Sindh alone and caused death of large numbers of livestock. Agencies report a localized severe food security situation with some 3 million people requiring emergency food assistance. High undernourishment level and a situation of alarming hunger are reported in the country. Government is helped by International agencies to assist people affected by floods. WFP has provided food aid to 1.2 million people and aims at reaching 2.5 million people in the coming weeks.

    Prices registered a sharp decline since September; however maize prices in Mogadishu have shown a highly volatile trend. Despite the declaration of the end of the famine conditions, an estimated 2.32 million people are considered in need of food assistance. Conflict, insecurity and drought have been major drivers of food insecurity and related displacement. In this period there have been no reported government policies in agriculture and food security.
