Synopsis (short abstract) Cereal prices remained almost stable in the past few months mainly thanks to good food availability on the markets resulting from good harvests in the 2010. Although food security is generally good, some 2.3 million people are classified as food insecure, with poor and vulnerable groups in southern regions most affected. Civil insecurity is increasing due to the return of armed groups from Libya. Government is supporting the population with subsidized sales of cereals and food distribution while supporting agriculture with investments in irrigation.

    Cereal prices registered sharp unseasonal increases during the period between September 2011 and February 2012, due to shortages in production. The country is undergoing a serious food crisis with some 5.4 million people are estimated to be food insecure. Agencies agree that the situation is likely to worsen in the upcoming months, as food reserves will be depleted. Major drivers of the current food crisis are both drought, which resulted in food shortages, and the current fighting in Mali , which is causing a huge influx of refugees particularly in Northern and Western Niger. The Government, together with humanitarian community, is attempting to prevent a further deterioration of the food security situation.

    Prices of wheat and rice in Karachi and Lahore went up between May and September 2011. The high food prices contribute to deteriorating food security conditions. More than 8.9 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh and Balochistan. Floods have destroyed some 2.1 million acres of crops in Sindh alone and caused death of large numbers of livestock. Agencies report a localized severe food security situation with some 3 million people requiring emergency food assistance. High undernourishment level and a situation of alarming hunger are reported in the country. Government is helped by International agencies to assist people affected by floods. WFP has provided food aid to 1.2 million people and aims at reaching 2.5 million people in the coming weeks.

    Prices of sorghum, millet and wheat steadily increased in most markets due to shortages in the 2011 production. Wheat prices, not only have shown a volatile trend, but were also nearly three times higher than international prices. About 3.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Moreover, as the lean season will start earlier than usual, the number is expected to increase further. Conflict in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, severely affects food security conditions , particularly constraining access to food of poorer households. The government has imposed restrictions to the delivery of emergency assistance to the conflict-affected population in the southern region.
