Synopsis (short abstract) Although prices have shown a stable trend in recent months, particularly thanks to cross-border imports, prices remained at very high levels compared to last year. Food security conditions were estimated at a stressed phase in south and south-eastern areas as well as in the Senegal River Valley and in peri-urban areas of Nouakchott. The number of food insecure people was estimated to be 453,000; major drivers of food insecurity in this period are the high prices on markets and late rains i n pastoral areas. The government is implementing new measures to assist farmers' activities through training, irrigation and mechanization while also supporting poor consumers with subsidized shops, though these were due in June.

    The country is affected by high food prices resulting from the reduced 2011 harvest and high international food prices. According to recent surveys, the number of food insecure people is 838,000, with acute food insecurity levels already noted in southeastern Mauritania; the situation is expected to deteriorate further in the upcoming months. Massive displacement caused by recent fighting in Mali has forced some 11,000 people into Mauritania. The Government has launched a plan to assist th e food insecure population with free food aid, subsidized cereal sales and livestock fodder.

    Prices of wheat and rice in Karachi and Lahore went up between May and September 2011. The high food prices contribute to deteriorating food security conditions. More than 8.9 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh and Balochistan. Floods have destroyed some 2.1 million acres of crops in Sindh alone and caused death of large numbers of livestock. Agencies report a localized severe food security situation with some 3 million people requiring emergency food assistance. High undernourishment level and a situation of alarming hunger are reported in the country. Government is helped by International agencies to assist people affected by floods. WFP has provided food aid to 1.2 million people and aims at reaching 2.5 million people in the coming weeks.

    Prices of sorghum, millet and wheat steadily increased in most markets due to shortages in the 2011 production. Wheat prices, not only have shown a volatile trend, but were also nearly three times higher than international prices. About 3.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Moreover, as the lean season will start earlier than usual, the number is expected to increase further. Conflict in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, severely affects food security conditions , particularly constraining access to food of poorer households. The government has imposed restrictions to the delivery of emergency assistance to the conflict-affected population in the southern region.
