    Rice prices decreased in the recent months thanks to good Aman and Aus production, while wheat prices continued to rise. Localized food insecurity persists. International agencies agree on a high prevalence of hunger and the need to assist people in the south west that were affected by the floods, with food and non-food items. Floods have caused extensive damages to the agricultural sector, seriously affecting some 1.3 million people. The Government provides incentives to farmers through procurement from the domestic market to amid a continued fall in prices of both rice and paddy.

    Prices of wheat and rice in Karachi and Lahore went up between May and September 2011. The high food prices contribute to deteriorating food security conditions. More than 8.9 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh and Balochistan. Floods have destroyed some 2.1 million acres of crops in Sindh alone and caused death of large numbers of livestock. Agencies report a localized severe food security situation with some 3 million people requiring emergency food assistance. High undernourishment level and a situation of alarming hunger are reported in the country. Government is helped by International agencies to assist people affected by floods. WFP has provided food aid to 1.2 million people and aims at reaching 2.5 million people in the coming weeks.

    Prices of sorghum, millet and wheat steadily increased in most markets due to shortages in the 2011 production. Wheat prices, not only have shown a volatile trend, but were also nearly three times higher than international prices. About 3.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Moreover, as the lean season will start earlier than usual, the number is expected to increase further. Conflict in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, severely affects food security conditions , particularly constraining access to food of poorer households. The government has imposed restrictions to the delivery of emergency assistance to the conflict-affected population in the southern region.
