    Rice prices in local markets have shown an upward trend since July/August peaking at very high levels in December. A political crisis and civil unrest was reported in the country as the referendum for the new constitution took place in November. The food security situation is particularly severe in the South where crops were affected by drought. Agencies estimate 2.5 million people are severely food insecure. Government policies in food security and agriculture are hampered by the poli tical tensions.

    Maize prices in Harare are showing a stable trend and have gradually increased in recent months. Political tensions are undermining stability while the country is also facing an alarming outbreak of HIV. Although the food security situation was reported to have been relatively stable, around 1.7 million people require food assistance and agencies report a serious situation of hunger. The Government has put in place policies to assist farmers with agricultural input schemes and food aid d istributions.

    Cereals prices have been rising in recent months and are much higher than international prices. The country has been affected by widespread drought and fires which have severely impacted on food security conditions. According to international agencies the country is faced with a worrying food security situation and thousands of people are in need of food assistance. The Government has lifted its export ban on maize.
