Corporate general interestSeasonal migration and child labour in agriculture
Background paper
2021Also available in:
No results found.Agricultural production relies heavily on migrant labour across geographies and production systems, from large-scale plantations growing food crops for global supply chains to small-scale pastoralist families following their herds to new pastures depending on seasons. Much of the migration is seasonal, filling peak labour demands, such as during harvest. Hence, stable agri-food systems that can contribute to fulfilling Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 on zero hunger are intrinsically intertwined with migrant workers’ lives and working conditions. While migration can provide families with new opportunities, it can also pose challenges to children migrating with their parents or left behind. Seasonal agricultural migration often occurs informally and remains invisible. Migrant children often supplement adult family members’ labour and see their access to education constrained, and children in migrant families are at significantly higher risk of child labour than other children in the destination area. This paper provides a global overview of the current state of knowledge and remaining gaps on the topic and highlights the challenges and opportunities to address child labour related to seasonal migration in agriculture. -
GuidelineTechnical guidelines for sustainable management of fall armyworm along its seasonal migration pathways
Guidance note 11
2020Also available in:
No results found. This guidance note aims to provide recommendations on sustainable fall armyworm (FAW) control for national task forces for FAW control in Africa and Asia. It provides a brief background on the need to develop two complementary strategies for fall armyworm management: 1) one for the pest’s year-round breeding areas, 2) another one along the pest’s seasonal migration pathways. The guidance note then focuses on delineating strategies for fall armyworm control along its seasonal migration pathways. The note emphasizes the importance of surveillance and monitoring of FAW migration, feeding the data into an early warning system and disseminating early warning information widely to assist strategic decisions making upon the pest’s arrival in a new area along its migration pathways. The note adopts an Integrated Pest Management approach, integrating a suite of options including agroecological practices, biological control and use of pesticides as the last resort. -
Policy briefSeasonal migration in Europe and Central Asia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic 2021
Also available in:
Seasonal migration has been greatly affected by COVID-19 mobility restrictions. More specifically, migrant workers engaged in seasonal employment have suffered an immense blow as a result of the enforcement of lockdown measures, which further increased the uncertainty of their livelihoods and of the welfare and economic security of their households in their countries of origin. This brief has been prepared as part of the work on addressing migration-related issues across the region of Europe and Central Asia, including the impact of COVID-19 on seasonal migration. The brief is reviewing the situation in the countries of the region, where seasonal migration is more common. It presents the assessment of the pandemic’s impacts on the mobility of migrants, food security of households, remittance flows, as well as the policies of the countries in the region to ease the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic.
