Synopsis (short abstract) This working paper describes the attempt made to conduct an integrated study of the biological, economic and sociological aspects of the fisheries and fisherfolk that use one of the most traditional and popular fishing craft of the east coast of India kattumaram. The benefits of the results from such an approach are also presented in this report. The paper discusses the significance of using one or more types of fishing gear with such a traditional craft, correlation between income from fishin g and income from other sources and consequent diversity in income categories, relative performance by other types of craft, interactive fishing problems, exploitation of resources, underutilized resources, motorization of traditional craft, marketing practices and improvements and opportunities for additional/alternative income generation. Periodic exchanges of information between the study-group and fisherfolk, in the course of this study, opened the doors to communication with fisherfolk on i ssues concerning resources and management and culminated in the preparation of a series of extension material in this field. This project was carried out in cooperation with the Department of Fisheries, Andhra Pradesh State, India, and was sponsored by a Bayof Bengal Programme (BOBP) project, ‘Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal’ (GCP/RAS/118/MUL). The post-harvest technological investigations were conducted under the direction and supervision of Mr. David Walker, Adviser , ODA. The socio-economic investigations were conducted by Ms. Christina Lundquist, Socio-economist (APO) of the Bay of Bengal Programme. And Messrs P.R. Prathap Kumar and I. Ramaswamy were responsible for painstakingly collecting most of the data included in this report.

    During the second half of 1979 and the first quarter of 1980 a survey was carried out in some fishing villages of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, to obtain information on the types of kattumarams used on the East Coast of India, the kinds of fishing gear used with the kattumaram, the methods of operation, catches and costs. This working paper presents the results of the survey. The text and the photographs give a brief summary of kattumaram types and their economic importance. A comprehensiv e pictorial record of the kattumaram types is also available. For those requiring more detailed data on materiats, construction, fishing gear, operations and costs, a comprehensive record of the information obtained during the survey is to be found in the appendices. The survey was carried out by Mr. T. R. Menon, Chief Instructor (Craft and Gear), Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET), Cochin. He was deputed to the Bay of Bengal Programme during July-S eptember 1979 and in March 1980. The Bay of Bengal Programme and FAO express their gratitude to the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, and to the Director of CIFNET for making Mr. Menons services available to carry out the work.

    A Study of The Performance of Selected Small Fishing Craft on the East Coast of India-BOBP/WP/74 1992

    This paper compares the economic performance of the beachianding craft (BLC) and several other motorized and non-motorized small-scale fishing craft in three villages on the east coast of India, viz. Pentakota (Orissa), Tummelapenta (Andhra Pradesh) and Thirumullaivasal (Tamil Nadu). The relationship between the fishing operations of the different craft and various factors affecting BLC operations are also discussed. The study, conducted during 1989 through the beginning of 1990, and this pap er which reports on it, have been sponsored by the Bay of Bengal Programme’s (BOBP) Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal (GCP/RAS/1l8/MUL).     Report of Investigations to Improve the Kattumarams of India East Coast - BOBP/REP/17 1984

    This report gives an account of the various efforts made by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) to improve the economic performance of fishing kattumarams within the constraints set by social and economic considerations outlined in the text. A wide spectrum of possibilities has been investigated and some of them have been tried out in physical trials. Many of the ideas put forward during the course of the work were however discarded as nonviable after consul tations with experts in different disciplines. During the work the best available experts have been engaged and consulted. They include, besides BOBP staff, counterparts and fishermen, Messrs P. Gurtner and J. Fyson of the FAO Fishery Industries Division; Mr. G. Eddie, fishery engineering consultant, UK; Mr. J. McKillop, sail manufacturer, UK; Mr. G. Gowing, surf-crossing expert, Australia; and Mr. O. Gulbrandsen, naval architect, Norway. But the responsibility for opinions, errors or misjudge ments in this report rests entirely with the BOBP. Parallel with the attempts to improve the kattumarams, extensive work was undertaken to develop motorized beachlanding craft. It is referred to in this report but the full account of these activities is given in other BOBP reports and working papers.
