Synopsis (short abstract) It is widely assumed that increased penetration of modern fuels in developing countries implies a process of fuel transition (or fuel shift or fuel substitution), away from traditional fuels and towards modern fuels. A related assumption is that such a shift depends on per capita GNP, and further assumptions are that this fuel shift can and should be promoted by development efforts. These assumptions are not always right and lead to misleading conclusions. In this paper these assumptions and the conclusions which can be drawn from it are discussed in more detail.

    More than half of Belarus’ total peatland area (over 1.5 million ha) has been drained for agriculture, forestry and peat extraction. Out of this area, 122 200 ha are cutover peatlands that have been abandoned after peat excavation, and 36 800 ha are still being utilized. During the last few years, about 50 000 ha of drained peatlands have been rewetted. Another 500 000 ha are potentially available for hydrological restoration.

    This study was conducted to discuss the carbon storage effect of wood use as a sustainable way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in cities, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Wood delays the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere until its final decomposition. Thus, wood utilization is known as a good way to reduce greenhouse gases. At this point where carbon neutrality is a top priority worldwide, the best way to use wood as a carbon storage is to use wood as a high-demand and long-lasting urban facility or building. Adding or replacing wood facilities and buildings in a city will transform a city that emits carbon into a city that stores carbon. To implement a wooden city for carbon neutrality, international discussions on carbon storage in wood products and overseas cases promoting the use of wood in cities were reviewed and analyzed. In addition, the amount of carbon storage was quantitatively evaluated assuming that Seoullo 7017, an existing public facility in the urban space of Seoul, was replaced with wood.
