Synopsis (short abstract) The contribution that is accrued from forest genetic resources to man’s life in Malawi and other countries is enormous. Human beings in many tropical countries suffer the ecological and environmental effects that have been caused by the over-exploitation of forest genetic resources. Efforts that have been made to address the situation seem to be overweighed by the rate of deforestation and uncontrolled fires taking place in many countries. Time has come that countries should team up together to carry out some programs that can enhance better ways of sustaining the environment and at the same time maintaining forest genetic resources.

    Tropical forests are particularly vulnerable to exploitation due to the combination of ecological complexity, sensitivity to disturbance and high demand for the wide range of goods and services and other opportunities for material gain that they provide. Zambia is estimated to be losing about 200 000-300 000 hectares of forests annually through licensed and unlicensed logging operations, charcoal production, shifting cultivation, late forest fires and establishment of illegal settlements in fore st reserves. One of the consequences is loss of biodiversity and genetic resources of many tree species, which threatens their continued existence or their possible future use.
