No results found.The workshop on How to leverage the Illuminating Hidden Harvests approach for better small-scale fisheries data explored how the results and methodology of the study Illuminating Hidden Harvests: The contributions of small-scale fisheries to sustainable development study (IHH) can be leveraged to support the improvement of small-scale fisheries data, with a view to inform management and policy. The IHH is a global initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Duke University and WorldFish carried out in support of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The IHH report, published in March 2023, provides new evidence about the benefits, interactions and impacts of small-scale fisheries to inform policy and practice.This workshop focused on sub-Saharan Africa as a starting point; however, in the future, collaboration and support could extend to other regions. The workshop concluded that there is considerable value in both the IHH approach and the data already collected that can be capitalized on, at both national and regional levels, taking country priorities into account. Small-scale fisheries organizations should be further empowered for engagement in relevant policy processes by equipping them with IHH data and information, and partnerships should be sought also outside the fisheries sector. Tailored communication pathways and products for diverse audiences will be needed, including multiple language translations and simplified versions of the IHH report. Using the IHH results and approach wisely will help improve the knowledge on the subsector and contribute to sustainable development. -

The Regional Workshop on Safety at Sea in Artisanal and Small-scale Fisheries in the South West Indian Ocean was held in Moroni, Union of the Comoros, from 12 to 14 December 2006. Forty-one experts from the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region including an expert from Sweden and representatives of FAO participated. The workshop was organized and implemented by the Fishing Technology Service of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, in close collaboration with the FAO Subregiona l Office for Southern Africa. During the workshop, the results of the Study on safety at sea in artisanal and smallscale fisheries in the South West Indian Ocean, conducted in May 2006, were presented. In addition, seven experts from SWIOFC member States made presentations and took up matters affecting safety at sea in their countries. Experts from Grenada, Sweden and FAO made presentations on global and regional aspects of safety at sea that enriched the information provided to the delegates. The information presented was debated in four working groups on different themes covering fishing operations, data collection, legal framework and technology. -

No results found.The Expert workshop on developing guidelines for inspection and valuation of small-scale fishing vessels, was held at FAO headquarters in Rome on 24–26 September 2024. Thirty-two fisheries insurance experts, maritime safety inspectors, naval architects, fisheries associations and fisheries experts, as well as representatives of the Africa Rural and Agricultural Credit Association, the Asia-Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association, the International Maritime Organization and the CAFI-SSF Network participated in the workshop. The workshop was organized by FAO to address some of the key barriers in the supply of insurance services to small-scale fishers worldwide, such as the limited knowledge of fishing vessels and fishing operations among insurers, gaps in safety inspections of small fishing vessels, and the perceived low profitability, high transaction costs, and cumbersome administrative processes associated with small fishing vessel insurance services.The workshop aimed to develop tools to facilitate the supply of insurance services for the millions of small fishing vessels of less than 12 metres in length that operate in developing countries.The workshop discussed and contributed to the finalization of guidelines and checklists for the survey and inspection of small fishing vessels and insurance value and risk assessment of small fishing vessels. Subjects discussed included the conduct of small fishing vessel surveys, practical vessel stability tests, safety inspections methods, value and risk assessment methods, vessel depreciation assessment tools, and methods to fast-track insurance supply for small fishing vessels.
