No results found.The overall objective of the On farm Irrigation Development in Old Lands (OFIDO) project is to contribute to the reduction of poverty and the empowerment of poor rural households through targeted interventions aiming to improve water use efficiency at farm levels and to increase the yields, productivity and income of smallholders and the poor. In order to draw lessons from the implementation of this project and to apply them to the national programme to modernize irrigation, FAO, upon request of the Government of Egypt, conducted an independent technical assessment to provide a comprehensive overview of the performance of improved irrigation systems in three governorates within the OFIDO project’s area of intervention, located in the north, centre and south of the country. -

No results found.This publication presents the outcomes of the Regional Aquaculture Conference “Shaping the future of sustainable aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region” organized in Heraklion, Greece, by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and the Government of Greece, with the financial support of the European Union. It includes an overview of the main advances, challenges and vision for the aquaculture sector, as well as the main outcomes and conclusions of the event and the abstracts of the keynote speeches and panel discussions. Marking a decade since the first regional aquaculture conference held in Bari, Italy, and building on the outcomes of the 2023 High-level Conference on MedFish4Ever Initiatives, the event convened high-level decision makers and stakeholders, including aquaculture experts and representatives from research, academia and international, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as producers and aquaculture farmers’ associations from across the region. The compiled conclusions and abstracts in this document aim to inform the next MedFish4Ever Declaration and guide the GFCM and its Members in assessing progress and defining future national and regional strategic actions for the sustainable development of aquaculture. -

No results found.Within the last few decades, advances in genetic technologies have created powerful and efficient tools for fisheries stock identification, genetic improvement and domestication of aquaculture species and characterization of changes in aquatic life due to environmental or anthropogenic influences. Emerging genetic tools are improving our understanding of organisms in aquatic ecosystems, in terms of diversity, distribution, abundance, movement, function and adaptation, and are being applied in aquaculture facilities and across fishery and aquaculture value chains. In this study expert elicitation was used to examine and predict current and potential future (10 year) impacts of the application of these novel technologies in fisheries and aquaculture. Highlighting the need to prepare sectors for likely changes that will follow. All suggestions received were collated into themes, to provide a conceptual framework that partitions potential impacts, and calls for required action — action required on governance, management and practical application of these innovations at both a national and international level.
