Synopsis (short abstract) The report gives an overview of climate change and agriculture in Tanzania. Tanzania was one of two countries that participated in the implementation of the pilot projects led by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture Programme. The report looks at the policy environment for climate change in Agriculture in Tanzania, including their development vision and national climate change strategy. It looks at current and potent ial climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies: National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA), Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) and also REDD+ as a mechanism for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in AFOLU. It concludes that the government has engaged in efforts to reduce GHG emissions and that efforts by the government to modernize agriculture are underway through policy reforms and support from the private sector.

    This guideline is an instructive tool that highlights key climate change and agricultural risks in the United Republic of Tanzania and provides information on mainstreaming climate change adaptation and mitigation objectives within rural development. It provides guidance on how this could best be achieved through the implementation of the CSA approach, in line with other policies related to agriculture sectors, food and nutrition security, and climate change. Its goal is thus primarily to inform on the implementation of the CSA framework and to describe the CSA practices and technologies best suited for different regions and agro–climatic zones of the country.

    This case study reports the results of a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) applied to the Conservation Agriculture Scaling-up Project (CASU) which promoted conservation agriculture for climate change adaptation in Zambia. The study also reports an econometric analysis conducted to determine the barriers to adoption of the promoted sustainable farm management practices and to estimate the impact of factors which may facilitate adoption. This study was carried out under the Integrating Agricultural Sectors into National Adaptation Plans programme (NAP-Ag) with the aim of generating empirical evidence about adaptation options in agriculture and to inform adaptation policy dialogues in Zambia. These findings can inform policy makers and development practitioners working to promote conseravtion agriculture measures for climate change adaptation in the context of national adaptation planning processes.

    Maasai communities in Kenya adapting to climate change by adopting smart-agriculture practices 2019

    In the Rift Valley, the Maasai groups of Naishorua, Silale, Menjele, Innkarukok olmane and Olroup live in the heart of Kenya’s Maasai Land: the Kajiado County, with its dryland conditions and semi-arid climate. Today, Maasai men leave their families for longer times and travel further in search of pasture and water resources for their livestock, thus contributing to the increased transboundary movement of various animal herds in the region. Using their observation and understanding of the changing weather patterns, these pastoral communities have been seeking to adapt to the ever-changing climate in an attempt to protect their livelihoods and lifestyle. Among these local nomadic populations, two key figures, Ryan and Paul, from the village of Enkorika, Kajiado County, have been instrumental in helping their communities cope with the negative effects of drought and water shortage.
