Synopsis (short abstract) Agriculture plays a critical role in Fiji’s development byupholding food and income security, promoting theadvancement of communities and offering opportunitiesin international trade. In 2013, agriculture accounted for9 percent of Fiji’s GDP, with the industry growing by3.4 percent thanks largely to increased production ofsugarcane, yagona, taro and coconut (according to theFBoS). In 2014, an agricultural statistics unit, headed bya trained statistician, was established in the MoA in aneffort to improve data collection and analysis in theagriculture sector. This has led to the implementation ofan agricultural survey and, consequentially, theidentification of capacity building requirements withinthe MoA regarding the design, implementation anddissemination of the survey, as well as sampling methods.The limited accuracy, collection and dissemination ofinformation on agricultural production makes it difficultfor stakeholders, both public and private, to monitorthe performance of the agriculture sector, evaluate theimpact of public sector interventions and external events(e.g. cyclones) and develop evidence-based policiesand strategies for economic growth.

    The importance of good statistical data and its analysis in the national development of countries is seldom appreciated. In order to make progress in alleviating poverty, benchmarks to measure progress need to be established. This is especially true of the Pacific countries where a clear definition of poverty and its scope in the region is still lacking. National capacities in data collection and statistical analysis need to be strengthened to provide decision-makers with accurate information. T his workshop, held in Nadi, Fiji from 10 to 13 November 2003, focused on ways to measure food security and poverty in the Pacific and, specifically, to assist countries in formulating and utilizing a food and agricultural statistics system in the framework of an integrated system of agricultural statistics.

    Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy of Fiji, contributing USD 451 million (nine percent) annually to gross domestic product, accounting for around 28 percent of total employment in the formal sector and, indirectly, employing many more The sector plays an important role in rural development, and has great potential in other sectors, such as tourism and agro industries Possessing a rich resource base and tropical climate, Fiji has an advantage in the production of a wide variety of tropical fruit and vegetables, and, given the rapidly expanding tourism sector, agricultural growth is needed to supply high local hotel demand The potential for Fiji's agriculture sector is thus in production for local consumption, in the export of high value commodities and in niche agricultural produce Animal health and plant protection are key priorities for the sector The management of plant and animal health in Fiji is provided for under the Biosecurity Promulgation 2008 This is based on a biosecurity model law completed in 2007 by the Pacific Community ( as a resource for SPC members to use when creating national legislation for plant health and animal health.
