Synopsis (short abstract) The passing of Cyclone Harold on 6 April 2020 caused extensive damage to the agriculture sector, including losses of main staples and export crops. About half of the total population is estimated to be in need of assistance due to the impact of the cyclone. International food and agriculture assistance is urgently needed to avoid the deterioration of the local food security situation. COVID-19 prevention measures may hamper the timely delivery of humanitarian aid. Necessary measures need to be taken to avoid this. FAO is working with the Vanuatu authorities to restore agricultural production and rebuild livelihoods.

    Favourable weather, coupled with improved security conditions, led to an upturn in cereal production in 2020. Despite a well-above-average wheat harvest, after accounting for anticipated Government imports and food assistance, an uncovered gap between total availability and utilization is expected during the 2020/21 marketing year (July/June). Ample domestic production of barley is likely to be sufficient to cover domestic feed and seed needs in the 2020/21 marketing year (July/June).

    Drought curbs 2021 production prospects, heightening the risk of a sharp deterioration in food insecurity

    Significant rainfall deficits in the southern regions have caused a decline in the area planted to staple foods and led to poor vegetation conditions in cropped areas, curbing production expectations in 2021. The foreseen production decline would follow several consecutive years of below-average harvests and would likely trigger an increase in the prevalence and severity of food insecurity, with several districts already nearing critical levels of severe acute malnutrition. The adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have further heightened households’ vulnerability to food insecurity.

    Food insecurity severely deteriorating in southern parts of the country

    A 7.2-magnitude earthquake and a tropical depression have caused losses of lives and severe damages to infrastructure in Sud, Grand’Anse, Nippes and Sud-Est departments. The food insecurity situation, which has been steadily worsening since 2018 amid the economic downturn and socio-political turmoil, has deteriorated significantly due to losses of livelihoods caused by the natural disasters. In the four affected departments, about 980 000 people are estimated to be severely food insecure between September 2021 and February 2022, about 45 percent of the local population. It is also likely that stored crops have been lost, while the 2021 second season maize and bean crops have been affected by flooding and landslides.
