Synopsis (short abstract) Cereal prices in local markets have decreased in recent months but remain at high levels, compared to the period before the 2007/08 food crises. Continuing insecurity throughout the country is exacerbating the already poor food security situation. Agencies are seriously concerned over the extremely alarming food security conditions throughout the country. Different UN agencies have continued providing assistance to the conflict affected population.

    Civil insecurity restricts access to agricultural land, while high and volatile prices impede food access. The current very high and severe food insecurity is expected to deteriorate further in the long term. WFP warns that a funding gap will hamper its food aid operations in the coming months. The UN peacekeeping mission will withdraw from the country by December 2010, leaving the Government to handle the security and humanitarian situation.

    Wheat and barley prices increased in August but remained below the peak of April 2010. Cereal prices remained stable in September. Bread price briefly increased by 10% on 25 September but went back to previous level after government's intervention; In early July, Moldova had a severe flood which caused damages in several districts affecting livelihoods, crops and infrastructures; Six percent of the population was estimated to be undernourished in 2005-07, according to the latest FAO figures wh ich were released in September; The prevalence of poverty in 2009 was 26%, level similar to 2008 and 2007, but the divide between urban and rural areas significantly increased.

    Recent good 'kremti' rains have benefited the 2010 main season cereal crops. Late but good rains have improved the prospect of a good harvest, but the country remains vulnerable due to low productivity and erratic rainfall. Different agencies project very hig and extremely alarming levels of food insecurity. The Government aims at improving food security by increasing production and securing food reserves.
